Two of the most pool-active communities in Surprise have meaningfully different pool leak detection scenarios: Sun City Grand and Marley Park. Understanding what is different about each helps homeowners in both communities know what to expect when they call for pool leak detection service.
Pool Context in Sun City Grand
Sun City Grand has two categories of pools that create two very different service call scenarios. The Sun City Grand Community Association’s Recreation Centers manage multiple large community pools, including indoor and outdoor pools at the Bell Recreation Center, Cimarron Center, and other facilities. If there is a leak at one of these community pools, the Recreation Centers Association handles the repair through their commercial pool contractor. Individual homeowners should call the Recreation Centers office, not a residential plumber, for community pool issues.
Private pools on individual Sun City Grand lots are the homeowner’s responsibility and are what we service. Private Sun City Grand pools are often smaller than the community pools but face the same challenges as any Surprise private pool: hard CAP water at 12 to 20 GPG accelerates calcium scale buildup on pool surfaces and equipment, and the intense Sonoran summer heat creates significant evaporation rates that must be distinguished from a genuine leak.
Pool Context in Marley Park
Marley Park’s New Urbanist design does not include a central community pool system, so all pools in the community are private residential pools. This removes the ambiguity about whose responsibility a pool leak is. Marley Park pools are among the most frequently serviced in Surprise for a specific reason related to the community’s design: the established xeriscape, street trees, and paver hardscape that characterize Marley Park after 15 to 20 years create a landscape that homeowners strongly prefer not to excavate.
When a Marley Park pool leak involves an underground supply line between the pool and the equipment pad, the approach to repair matters: a conventional excavation across an established xeriscape garden or paver patio is disruptive. Where the underground line condition and the specific leak location allow it, trenchless repair approaches or rerouting the supply line above ground along the fence line can restore service without disturbing the landscape above the original line path.
Evaporation vs. Leak: The Bucket Test
Sonoran desert evaporation from a Surprise pool varies by season and wind conditions. In midsummer, a pool can lose a quarter inch to a half inch of water per day to evaporation alone, without any leak. Before calling for a pool leak detection service, a simple bucket test provides a meaningful baseline: place a bucket filled with pool water on the top pool step at the same waterline level as the pool. Mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool water level against the bucket exterior. After 24 hours without running the pump, compare how much each has dropped.
If the pool has lost more water than the bucket over the same period, a leak is very likely. If both have lost roughly the same amount, the loss is evaporation. An autofill system that runs noticeably more than usual, or that runs continuously to maintain level, is a stronger indicator of a leak than water level observation alone.
What Pool Leak Detection Involves
We distinguish plumbing leaks from structural leaks using different diagnostic approaches. For plumbing leaks in the underground supply and return lines between the pool and the equipment pad, we perform a pressure test: all plumbing runs are isolated with test plugs and pressurized to a specified level. A pressure drop over time indicates a leak in that section of plumbing. An acoustic hydrophone then identifies the underground location of the escaping water without excavation.
For structural leaks at the pool shell itself, including leaks around skimmer fittings, return fittings, light niches, and the pool surface, we use dye testing: a colored dye is introduced near suspected leak points and observed for movement toward the leak path. In most cases, we do not drain the pool to locate a plumbing leak. Draining is only appropriate when a repair requires access to a specific area of the pool shell that cannot be accessed from the water side. Scheduling Pool Leak Detection in Surprise
Pool leak detection in Surprise is available year-round, but scheduling before the heavy use season (before April) or immediately after you notice symptoms allows us to address any underground line repairs before the pool is needed daily. Properties in Sun City Grand with private pools should confirm whether the loss they are seeing is from the private pool or a shared community facility before calling.
